Psalms 27:4 "I have asked the Lord for ONE thing; one thing only do I want: to live in the Lord's house all my life, to marvel there at his goodness, and to ask for His GUIDANCE”

Jonah 1

1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it for their wickedness has come up before me."

3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare, and went down into the ship to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea so that the ship was about to be broken up.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god; and they cast the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down inside the ship and had laid down and was fast asleep.

6 So the shipmaster came and said to him, "What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call upon your God! Perhaps your God will consider us so that we shall not perish."

7 And they said to one another, "Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil is upon us." So they cast lots and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 Then they said to him, "Tell us, we pray you, on whose account this evil is upon us? What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And who are your people?"

9 And he said to them, "I am an Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land."

10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him. "Why have you done this?" For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11 Then they said to him, "What shall we do with you, so that the sea may be calm for us? For the sea was becoming more and more tempestuous."

12 And he said to them, "Take me up and cast me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that this great tempest is upon you because of me."

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land, but they could not succeed for the sea became more and more tempestuous against them.

14 Therefore they cried to the LORD, and said, "We beseech you, O LORD, we beseech you, do not let us perish for this man's life, and do not charge us for innocent blood; for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you."

15 So they look up Jonah and cast him out into the sea, and the sea ceased its raging.

16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.

17 Now the LORD had provided a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 2

1 Then in the fish's belly Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,

2 And said: "I called to the LORD out of my affliction, and he heard me; I cried out of the belly of hell, and you heard my voice.

3 For you had cast me into the deep, into the midst of the seas, and the floods surrounded me; all your breakers and waves passed over me.

4 Then I said, I have been cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.

5 The waters surround me, even to the death; the deep closed around me, the seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 I went down to the roots of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever. Yet you have brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you into your holy temple.

8 Those who regard lying, worthless idols forsake their own mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."

10 Then the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

Jonah 3

1 And the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you."

3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city of three days' journey.

4 And Jonah began to enter into the city after a day's journey, and he cried, "In Forty days Nineveh shall be overthrown."

5 So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

6 For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne and he laid his robe aside, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7 And he made a proclamation and published it through Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink water.

8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands.

9 Who can tell, God may turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger so that we do not perish?"

10 And God saw their deeds, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented concerning the destruction that he had said that he would do to them; and he did not do it.

Jonah 4

1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

2 And he prayed to the LORD and said, "O LORD, was this not what I said when I was still in my country? That is why I fled to Tarshish for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness, who relents from sending disaster.

3 Therefore now, O LORD, I beseech you, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live."

4 Then the LORD said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"

5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city, and made himself a shelter there; and he sat under it in its shade until he might see what would become of the city.

6 Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah, so that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was very glad about the vine.

7 But when the sun dawned the next day God provided a worm, and it attacked the vine so that it withered.

8 And when the sun rose, God provided a vehement east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he fainted and wished himself dead, and said, "It would be better for me to die than to live."

9 And God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?" And Jonah said, "It is right for me to be angry, angry enough to die."

10 Then the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, for which you have not labored nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night.

11 Should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and many cattle as well?"
